Why Ketogenic Diet is Better Than the Traditional Diet

Sharing is caring!

The basic difference between the ketogenic diet and normal diet is the quantity of fat intake. In a traditional diet plan, fat is on the top of the food pyramid and should be taken in a small quantity, if not restricted. The traditional diet contains more carbohydrates. However, in the ketogenic diet you are asked to eat more fats, take more protein and avoid carbohydrate.

The ketogenic diet was discovered by a chance. The doctors and nutritionists while finding a way to control epilepsy that was not controlled through medicine found that when the patients ate low carbohydrates and consumed more proteins and fats, epilepsy could be contained.

Generally speaking, many people believe that a low carbohydrate diet is a ketogenic diet. However, this is not the case. These are many diet plans that emphasize on a low carb diet, Atkins diet for instance, however, these low carb diets are different from ketogenic diet. Low carb diets emphasize on eating low carbohydrate foods, however, ketogenic diet emphasize on eating food with low carbohydrates and eating high protein and fats. In order to break proteins you need fats. Therefore, in ketogenic diet, you have to keep the balance between proteins and fats. The amount of protein and fats you are supposed to eat if you want to try ketogenic diet actually depends on your diet plan and your lifestyle.

When you eat normal diet, carbohydrates break into glucose and glucose converts to energy. When the energy is not burned, it is stored as fat deposits. When you eat ketogenic diet, your body will produce more ketones and these ketones will convert into energy. The major benefit of burning ketones for energy is that the brain gets more energy, which is lacking in a traditional diet. The heart also functions better when you resort to ketogenic diet. Burning ketones for energy also benefits the liver. In fact, ketones are found in the liver. Liver burns fats into fatty acids and ketonees. The production of more glucose will result in fat deposits, however, if your liver produces more ketones, it does not get stored instead is flushed out from the body.

When you begin to consume less carbohydrate, your body will stop converting carbohydrates to glucose for energy. When you begin to eat more protein and fats, the fats you eat will break proteins, your liver will also convert fats to fatty acid and ketones. The body begins to use ketones for energy. When your body relies on glucose for energy, the excess glucose will be stored, however, when your body relies on ketones for energy, the excess ketones will automatically be flushed out of your body. Ketogenic diet is good if you want to lose your weight. Ketogenic diet also improves your brain function, heart function, and liver function.

Here is a basic comparison between the traditional diet and the ketogenic diet. This comparison will help you to understand how ketogenic diet is better than traditional diet and how ketogenic diet will help you to lose or control weight, and stay fit and healthy.

Traditional Diet

  • Emphasizes on eating carbohydrates
  • Produces glucose from carbohydrates and use it as energy
  • Excess glucose is stored as fats which ultimately increases weight
  • Restricts on eating fats because it is believed that fats produces fats
  • Includes protein in moderation
  • Allows for more fruit and vegetable in the menu
  • Prohibits on eating more
  • No provision to address hunger
  • Does not stop cravings

Ketogenic Diet

  • Emphasizes on eating less carbohydrate
  • Produces ketones and uses ketones for energy
  • Excess ketones is flushed out from the body, nothing is stored in the body
  • Allows for more fats in the food because fat is converted into fatty acids and ketones
  • Emphasize on eating more protein because protein builds tissues
  • Highlights on eating meat, eggs, fish
  • Does not prohibits on eating more
  • Addresses hunger issue
  • Alleviates cravings

As you can see, the principles of ketogenic diet are entirely opposite of a traditional diet. The traditional diet uses carbohydrates for energy and works by converting carbohydrates to glucose. However, in the ketogenic diet, the fats you eat are converted to ketones and ketones are burned to give you energy.

If you are eating traditional diet, your excess energy is stored as fats and you begin to put on weight. While on ktogenic didet, the ketones convert into energy and excess ketones are flushed out.

However, you need to remember one important thing. In ketogenic diet plan, consuming low carbohydrates is not enough. In the first stage, you need to restrict carbohydrates intake and stop relying on carbohydrate for energy. You will have to put your body into a ketogenic state and start using ketones for energy. In the second stage of ketogenic diet, you will also have to limit protein because when you continue to consume more protein, your body will start using protein for energy, instead of using ketones for energy.
